Yacqub Finey: Excelsior linked with move for GIF Sundsvall attacking midfielder

Dutch Eredivisie side Excelsior are being linked with a move for GIF Sundsvall attacking midfielder Yacqub Finey.

The 22-year-old, who represents GIF Sundsvall in Sweden’s Superettan, is reported to be attracting interest from Rotterdam-based Excelsior, with the latest speculation emerging on 22 May 2026. The prospective switch would see Finey move from Sweden’s second tier to the Dutch top flight, though the probability of the deal is currently listed as unclear (“?”).

Finey, born in Göteborg on 24 September 2003, holds both Swedish and Somali nationality and is valued at around €500,000. With his contract situation at Sundsvall not publicly disclosed and no expiry date listed, observers have suggested there is scope for the midfielder either to run down his deal and explore free agent options or for Sundsvall to cash in while he retains market value.

A left-footed attacking midfielder who wears the number 19 shirt, Finey has been used primarily in the No 10 role for Sundsvall in Superettan. The Swedish club, who have fluctuated between the Allsvenskan and the second tier in recent seasons, could face a key decision if Excelsior turn initial interest into a formal offer.

Recent performances have underpinned the growing attention. In Sundsvall’s latest league outing before the rumour surfaced, a Superettan fixture earlier this month, Finey featured in midfield and contributed to a disciplined display in a tight match, though his side were unable to find a breakthrough in a low-scoring encounter.

With a relatively modest valuation by Eredivisie standards at €500k, Finey may be viewed as a low-risk, high-upside option for Excelsior as they look to add creativity between the lines. A move to the Netherlands would mark his first venture outside Swedish football and could prove a significant step in shaping his career trajectory and international profile if the transfer materialises.
