Malian international Yacouba Sylla has made a surprising return to professional football, signing with Ligue 2 side La Berrichonne de Châteauroux.
The 34-year-old midfielder, who has had a lengthy career playing across France and beyond, expressed his excitement about this unexpected move.
“I am very happy with this signing. I can say that I signed for Châteauroux in an unexpected way,” Sylla said. “I did not expect to sign again for a professional club as a player.
I had rather focused on my coaching diploma. This signing will do me good, I will enjoy myself on the field over the next 6 months.”
Châteauroux, currently struggling at the bottom of the Ligue 2 table with just nine points from 14 matches, is in desperate need of a boost.
Sylla’s experience, particularly as the former captain of the Mali national team, is seen as a potential turning point for the club’s fortunes.
“My goal is to bring my experience to the club, and we will help the club to scratch points to climb up the standings,” Sylla remarked. “It is not impossible.
When they asked me to come, I accepted, and we will bring our experience both on and off the field. It is really nice to start this challenge.”
Despite being in the latter stages of his career, Sylla, born in Étampes, France, is ready to take on the challenge of helping Châteauroux avoid relegation.
His extensive experience with numerous clubs, including stints in Ligue 1 and abroad, will be key to his contributions.
“I feel ready to help the club get out of the red zone. We will give ourselves the means to get there. We hope to achieve this objective,” Sylla explained.
While Sylla had been focusing on earning his coaching diploma and had been considering a post-playing career, he is now determined to make an impact on the pitch.
“You are never too old to get younger,” he said, reflecting on his decision to return to action.
Though this move could likely be his final professional contract, Sylla’s dedication to football extends beyond playing.
He has expressed a desire to remain involved with the sport, especially in helping young players.
“I will be ready and available for young people who want to get involved in this environment. Together we can do a lot of things,” he added.
Sylla’s leadership and wealth of experience will undoubtedly be valuable to Châteauroux as they aim to climb out of the relegation zone and secure their future in Ligue 2.
