Slavia Prague sign Malian defender Yacouba Guitteye

Malian defender Yacouba Oumar Guitteye has joined Czech club Slavia Prague on a four-year contract, with his former coach Lassina Traoré praising the 18-year-old’s maturity and ability on the ball.

Guitteye recently completed his move from the Béton Armé Academy to Slavia Prague after attracting the attention of the Czech club’s scouts during a youth tournament in Morocco.

The centre-back has been identified as a promising defensive talent, with his development at the Malian academy now leading to an opportunity in European football.

Traoré, who worked with the teenager at the academy, highlighted several qualities that have helped Guitteye progress quickly.

Speaking exclusively to Africafoot, he said:

“Guitteye possesses exceptional qualities. He has excellent game reading skills. He’s calm, capable of making good passes, and defends well. He has very good ball control.

He has a great ability to anticipate the game. At center, we spotted him as a courageous young player; we developed his technical skills, and now he’s strong both with and without the ball.”

Guitteye’s performances eventually brought him to the attention of Slavia Prague after he represented the academy at a tournament in Morocco.

Traoré explained that the youngster was given the opportunity to compete at the tournament with the confidence of his coaches, where he performed in front of scouts who were monitoring emerging talent.

“He went to play in a tournament in Morocco with our full confidence. They competed in front of scouts at the Africa Cup. That’s where he was spotted by Slavia. He’s a very good center-back who plays with his left foot. That’s a major asset for his move to Slavia.”

The ability to operate as a left-footed central defender was identified as one of Guitteye’s key strengths and an important factor in his move to the Czech club.

His transfer also represents a significant moment for the Béton Armé Academy, which has continued to take part in youth competitions in Mali as it looks to identify and develop young players.

The academy regularly participates in competitions such as the inter-academy tournament, providing its players with opportunities to gain experience and attract attention from clubs beyond Mali.

Guitteye’s four-year agreement with Slavia Prague is therefore an important reward for the academy’s work in developing young talent.

The move gives the 18-year-old defender an opportunity to continue his development in Europe while allowing the training centre to build on his success.
