Algerian international Yacine Benzia has revealed fresh insights into his decision to represent Algeria on the global stage, despite initially considering a future with the French national team.
In a recent statement, the Azerbaijani Karabakh striker discussed the internal conflict he faced when deciding to wear the Green Falcons’ jersey.
Honestly, I could not say directly that I would go to play for Algeria and change my sports nationality,” he explained. “My answer was diplomatic.”
Benzia, who was playing for France at the time, explained that his heart was always with Algeria.
I made that statement when I was 18 years old. At that time, I was playing for France, and Algeria was always in my heart.”
His decision, which eventually saw him represent Algeria at the international level, reflects the deep connection he felt with his roots, despite the initial complexities of navigating national allegiance in the world of football.
