Xavi Espart gives Hansi Flick another reason to trust Barcelona’s academy

Xavi Espart is strengthening his claim for a place in Barcelona’s first team after impressing Hansi Flick during pre-season, with the 19-year-old earning praise for his performances at right-back despite usually playing in midfield.

Barcelona continue to rely heavily on the talent produced by their renowned La Masia academy as the club’s ongoing financial difficulties encourage greater investment in homegrown players. Espart and 20-year-old Hector Fort have emerged as the two young players to make the strongest impression on the German manager during preparations for the new campaign.

Espart chose to give up his holiday after starring at the UEFA European Under-19 Championship, recognising the importance of the summer to his career. His attitude and willingness to adapt to an unfamiliar position have impressed Barcelona’s coaching staff.

Speaking at the end of the team’s training camp in England, Flick said: “Xavi Espart performed brilliantly at right-back and played an excellent match against Birmingham. It is clear from training that he is at the top of his game, and much more besides.”

Espart, who has spent many years at Barcelona, says his ambition is to remain with the senior squad and make the most of the opportunities available to him.

“My goal is to stay here, and I will do my utmost so that the coach continues to trust me. I have spent many years at this club, and I know what I have to do and how to take advantage of the opportunities available to me,” he said.

He further enhanced his reputation on Saturday during the triangular tournament involving Udinese and Nottingham Forest. Espart started both matches, playing a total of one hour, and developed a notable understanding with Karim Adeyemi on the right wing.

Those performances are expected to improve his prospects of securing a place in the first team, alongside Brian Farinas. Espart’s current contract runs until 2028, but sporting director Deco has already begun work on extending the agreement.

Fort is facing a less certain future despite arriving at pre-season determined to prove himself. The defender came through at Les Corts and spent last season on loan at Elche.

According to reports, including those from journalist Matteo Moretto, Barcelona are prepared to listen to offers for Fort during the final stage of the transfer window. The priority for everyone involved is for Fort to play regularly and continue his development, either at Camp Nou or through another loan move.

That approach reflects Barcelona’s wider strategy of developing young players while managing their continuing financial pressure. The club has seen a significant number of La Masia graduates establish themselves in the first team over the past five years.

Gavi, Alejandro Balde, Fermin Lopez, Lamine Yamal, Marc Bernal and Marc Casado are among those to have made the breakthrough. Their emergence has helped strengthen Barcelona on the pitch while also providing social and financial benefits for the club.
