Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed that he will hold discussions with Nigerian striker Victor Boniface following the release of a video showing him using a mobile phone while driving at high speed.
The footage, which surfaced online, captured Boniface driving his Mercedes-AMG on the A4 at 140 km/h, seemingly reading comments on Instagram and checking the team’s starting lineup ahead of their Champions League match against Salzburg.
Alonso expressed concern over the incident, emphasizing that such behavior is unacceptable.
“It’s obviously not good, and it’s not allowed either. That doesn’t have to happen,” Alonso, as quoted by SPIEGEL Sport.
“I haven’t seen Boni yet. He knows, but we have to tell him again. That’s not right.”
Using a mobile phone while driving is illegal in Germany, with penalties including a fine of at least €128.50 and one point on the driver’s record.
This incident comes just weeks after Boniface was involved in a car accident as a passenger, from which he escaped with minor injuries.
Currently sidelined due to a thigh injury sustained during a recent Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match, Boniface had been in excellent form prior to his injury, scoring eight goals in fifteen appearances for Bayer Leverkusen.
