Xabi Alonso explains Enzo Fernandez omission for Chelsea’s Luton Town cup win

Xabi Alonso says he personally decided not to play Enzo Fernandez in Chelsea’s English League Cup victory over Luton Town, but offered no further explanation before the club’s Premier League meeting with Brighton on Sunday.

Chelsea progressed to the third round after a win secured by two goals from new signing Danny Welbeck and an own goal scored by a Luton Town player.

Asked by Sky Sports why Fernandez had not featured, Alonso said: “Not playing Enzo against Luton? I made the decision myself, he is a professional player and trains excellently. I have nothing to say about this matter, we will see what happens on Sunday.”

Fernandez remains the subject of reported interest from Manchester City, who are continuing their efforts to sign the midfielder. The Argentina international previously worked under City manager Enzo Maresca during his time at Chelsea.

Alonso was also asked whether Chelsea could complete more signings before the transfer window closes. He responded: “More signings before the end of the transfer window? Nobody knows, there are surprises and movements in football that we must be ready for. We are patient and preparing well.”

The Chelsea manager was then questioned about reports linking the club with Emiliano Martinez, the Argentina goalkeeper who plays for Aston Villa.

He said: “The signing of Emiliano Martinez? During the summer, there are many rumours and discussions. I do not want to talk about players who are not in my team. I prefer to talk about my players.”

According to reports, Chelsea have completed an agreement to sign Martinez from Aston Villa, although the club is yet to make an official announcement confirming the transfer.

The focus now turns to the Premier League, with Chelsea preparing to host Brighton on Sunday in the second round of the competition.

Chelsea began their league campaign with a 3-2 victory over Fulham. That result has left them sixth in the early Premier League table, and they will be looking to maintain their unbeaten start against Brighton.

Fernandez’s absence against Luton therefore remains unresolved beyond Alonso’s confirmation that it was his own selection decision. The midfielder is expected to remain a key subject of discussion while Manchester City’s reported interest continues and Chelsea assess their options before the transfer window closes.
