Wydad president steps in to resolve Hakim Ziyech dispute with medical team

Wydad president Ibrahim Al-Asri is intervening to resolve a dispute between Hakim Ziyech and the club’s newly appointed medical staff, with the Moroccan club seeking to protect the stability of the team before the start of the new season.

Al-Asri is expected to meet members of the medical department to hear from all sides and establish the circumstances behind the disagreement, according to the Moroccan newspaper Al Mountakhab.

The intervention follows earlier reports that Ziyech had fallen out with Wydad’s new medical team. The situation had raised concern among supporters that the former Morocco international could leave the club.

However, Al Mountakhab reported that the dispute was not caused by any professional failing on the part of the medical staff. The newspaper said the department was operating according to the relevant rules and procedures, and that the disagreement instead centred on differences in the way Ziyech preferred to be handled and monitored.

The situation reportedly escalated to the point where Ziyech refused to deal with members of the current medical team. That prompted Wydad’s management to become directly involved, with the club concerned that the disagreement could affect the player’s preparations as well as the atmosphere within the squad.

Ziyech had previously expressed his dissatisfaction with the decision to end the club’s association with doctor Mehdi Idrissi. Idrissi left Wydad to join the medical staff at French club Le Havre, while Ziyech had preferred to continue working with the previous medical team.

The meeting arranged by Al-Asri is intended to contain the dispute and preserve the club’s preparations ahead of the campaign. The Wydad president is seeking to listen to the different parties before deciding how the issue should be addressed.

Wydad finished last season’s Moroccan league competition in fifth place with 43 points. The club will not take part in continental competitions this season.

The dispute therefore comes as Wydad prepares for a campaign without African competition, with the club’s management focused on maintaining internal stability and ensuring Ziyech’s preparations are not disrupted. The exact outcome of the discussions between Al-Asri and the medical staff has not been reported.
