Wydad Athletic Club are reportedly close to reaching an agreement with Tunisian coach Nasreddine Nabi to take charge of the Moroccan giants following a disappointing start to the Botola Pro season.

According to SNRT News, the Casablanca-based club have reached a preliminary agreement with Nabi, although Wydad have yet to officially announce the departure of Portuguese coach Paulo Sérgio.

The potential change comes just four rounds into the campaign, with Wydad struggling to deliver consistent performances and results.

Nabi, who coached Wydad’s fierce rivals Raja Casablanca during the second half of last season, could return to Moroccan football in a move that would place him on the opposite side of Casablanca’s historic rivalry.

His previous spell at Raja was marked by controversy, adding further interest to the possibility of him taking charge of their city rivals.

Wydad struggle to find consistency

Wydad have recorded just one victory in their opening four league matches, leaving the club with five points from a possible 12.

Their only win came against Difaa El Jadida, whom they defeated 2-0. However, the Casablanca side subsequently suffered a disappointing 3-1 home defeat against Wydad Temara.

They also drew 0-0 with COD Meknes before playing out a 1-1 draw against Amal Tiznit at the Mohammed V Sports Complex.

The results have fallen short of expectations among supporters hoping to see the club challenge for domestic honours.

Wydad’s inconsistent start has also raised questions about the team’s technical direction under Paulo Sérgio, with club officials reportedly considering a change in leadership to improve results.

Nabi faces challenge of reviving Wydad

Should the reported agreement be finalised, Nabi will face the task of restoring Wydad’s competitiveness and helping the club recover from its difficult opening to the season.

His experience of Moroccan football, gained during his spell with Raja Casablanca, could help him adapt to the demands of the Botola Pro.

However, taking charge of Wydad would bring considerable pressure, given the club’s ambitions and the expectations of its supporters.

The prospect of Nabi moving from Raja to Wydad would also add an intriguing dimension to one of Moroccan football’s most intense rivalries.

Wydad have yet to confirm either Nabi’s appointment or Sérgio’s departure, leaving the club’s managerial situation unresolved.

The coming days could prove decisive as the Casablanca side consider their next move in an effort to improve their performances and results.
