Wydad Casablanca’s coach, Faouzi Benzarti, expressed deep disappointment and labeled his team’s performance as unacceptable following their 2-0 defeat to Tanzanian club Simba in the CAF Champions League on Tuesday.
The loss places the Moroccan team at the bottom of Group B, with only three points from four games, severely jeopardizing their chances of progressing in the tournament.
In a post-match interview, a frustrated Benzarti addressed reporters, stating, “It wasn’t our day. We had 10 chances but we couldn’t take advantage of them.
This is unacceptable from a club the size of Wydad in a competition like the CAF Champions League.”
The defeat comes at a critical juncture, with ASEC Mimosas securing a 3-0 victory over Jwaneng Galaxy and advancing to 10 points, solidifying their lead in the group.
Wydad now faces a monumental task to revive their campaign, especially with the Africa Cup of Nations looming in Côte d’Ivoire next month, putting the competition on hold.
Acknowledging the challenges ahead, Benzarti conceded, “Things have become very complicated, and the break can give us time to calmly study the gaps.”
The coach emphasized the need for strategic analysis and improvements during the hiatus to regroup and come back stronger for the remaining fixtures in the CAF Champions League.
As the group stage unfolds, Wydad Casablanca will require a comprehensive strategy to navigate through the challenges and revive their hopes of progressing to the later stages of the prestigious continental competition.
