Wydad Casablanca close in on Cameroonian star Vincent Aboubakar

Vincent Aboubakar is reportedly edging closer to a sensational move to Wydad Casablanca, with the Moroccan giants stepping up efforts to bring the experienced Cameroonian striker back to the African continent.

Following his departure from Turkish side Hatayspor, the 33-year-old forward is currently a free agent and weighing up his next destination.

Multiple sources close to the negotiations, including reports amplified by the Micky Jnr platform, suggest that Wydad have tabled a firm proposal aimed at securing the signature of Cameroon’s national team captain.

Aboubakar, a veteran of over 100 international caps for the Indomitable Lions, is believed to be considering the offer seriously. Turkish media outlets have gone a step further, indicating that a two-year agreement may already have been struck between the two parties.

However, no official confirmation has been made by either the player’s representatives or the Casablanca-based club.

This is not the first time Wydad Casablanca has courted the Garoua-born striker. A similar attempt was made last year but proved unsuccessful as Aboubakar was not prepared to return to the African football scene at that point in his career.

His stance appears to have shifted in recent months, with the allure of representing one of the continent’s most storied clubs now reportedly holding greater appeal.

Aboubakar’s career has included notable spells in Europe and the Middle East. He rose to prominence with FC Porto in Portugal, became a fan favourite during two stints with Beşiktaş in Turkey, and more recently played for Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Nassr.

Known for his power, leadership, and knack for scoring crucial goals, he has consistently delivered at both club and international levels.

Wydad Casablanca, a multiple-time CAF Champions League winner, are understood to be targeting high-profile reinforcements as they look to bounce back from a disappointing campaign.

Bringing in a player of Aboubakar’s calibre would not only bolster their attacking line but also serve as a strong statement of intent across the continent.

The potential acquisition of such an iconic figure would mark a significant coup for Moroccan football. The club’s fans at the Mohammed V Stadium—renowned for their passionate support—would no doubt welcome the arrival of the Cameroonian with enthusiasm.

While discussions remain ongoing, the sense of anticipation is growing. If finalised, the move could provide Aboubakar with a fitting new chapter to his illustrious career and offer Wydad Casablanca the kind of leadership and firepower that could help them reclaim domestic and continental honours.
