Wydad Athletic Club president Hicham Ait Mena is under intense scrutiny from fans following the team’s disappointing campaign at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
The Moroccan giants endured a disastrous outing, finishing bottom of their group without earning a single point — the worst performance among both Arab and African representatives at the tournament.
Frustration from supporters has not only been fueled by the poor results but also by the questionable decisions made by the club’s management.
Chief among these were several short-term and controversial player acquisitions orchestrated by Ait Mena, which failed to strengthen the squad.
The signing of veteran Syrian striker Omar Al Somah drew particular criticism. Al Somah featured in just two matches — against Juventus and Al Ain — and failed to make any meaningful impact.
Similar disappointment surrounded the additions of Brazilian Ferreira, Dutchman Meyer, and South African duo Thembinkosi Lorch and Cassius Mailula, all of whom exited the squad immediately after the tournament.
Adding to the mounting pressure, Wydad’s internal governing body — often referred to as the “Wydad Parliament” — is set to summon Ait Mena for questioning. Key among their concerns is the allocation of the club’s reported $9 million earnings from the competition.
One particularly controversial deal involves Brazilian midfielder Arthur, who reportedly cost the club $1.5 million, yet did not make a single appearance during the tournament.
With criticism growing louder, Ait Mena’s leadership now faces a pivotal test as calls for accountability continue to rise.
