Wydad AC goalkeeper Abdelali Mhamdi suffers rib injury

Wydad Athletic Club goalkeeper Abdelali Mhamdi suffered a serious injury in his outfit CAF Confederation Cup clash against Olympique Safi on Sunday.

Mhamdi was in action when his outfit played out a 2-2 draw against their Moroccan counterpart in the return fixture of the quarterfinals, with Safi qualifying at the expense of Wydad AC on away goal rule.

After undergoing scans, medical tests revealed that Mhamdi had sustained a broken rib along with a lung injury, requiring intensive monitoring to ensure his condition stabilized.

Mhamdi was admitted at the hospital before being discharged on Monday. He is expected to undergo a recovery period of more than four weeks. Only after this rest will he gradually resume training with the aim of returning to full fitness and competitive action.

The Moroccan giants now face a goalkeeping dilemma ahead of their upcoming Professional League fixture against Fath Union Sport scheduled for next Wednesday as part of the postponed tenth round.

With first-choice goalkeeper Mehdi Benabid away on national team duty and Mhamdi sidelined, Wydad will be forced to rely on their third-choice goalkeeper for the crucial encounter.

The club’s coaching staff is now tasked with adapting quickly to this challenge, ensuring defensive stability while Mhamdi undergoes rehabilitation, as Wydad look to maintain their domestic and continental ambitions despite the setback.
