The Senegal national football team, having qualified for the final round of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers after defeating Uganda, is facing a delay in receiving their bonuses. The players are waiting for their bonuses of one million FCFA each for the victory against Uganda. The delay in payment has raised concerns and is reminiscent of situations in the years before 2002 when issues related to bonuses were common.
Me Augustin Senghor, the president of the Senegalese football federation, acknowledged the delay and praised the players for their courage and patriotism. The delay in bonus payments comes at a time when there are reports of non-financing of Senegal’s matches, as indicated by Senegalese Sports Minister Mbagnik Ndiaye.
The situation is seen as serious and worrying for Senegalese football, especially given the team’s opportunity to participate in the World Cup. Federal sources suggest that if the state does not address the issue promptly, the federation will find means to pay the bonuses to avoid discouraging players.
