World Cup omission blamed for Brandon Petersen’s dip in form

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Thembinkosi Biyela believes captain Brandon Petersen’s recent struggles are linked to the disappointment of being left out of the World Cup squad at the last minute.

Petersen enjoyed an impressive campaign last season, but his form has dipped over the past two months and he has faced increasing criticism from Kaizer Chiefs supporters. Biyela, however, says the goalkeeper should not be judged too harshly, insisting it is impossible for a player of his quality to suddenly become poor.

The former striker believes Petersen’s confidence has been affected by his omission and has called on the Amakhosi faithful to support him rather than turn against him.

“This World Cup thing has hit him very hard. A good player cannot become a bad player overnight. He is making silly mistakes because he is now demotivated. We need to uplift his spirit, motivate him, and give him all the support he needs,” Biyela told KickOff.

Petersen had been expected to be included among the three goalkeepers selected for the World Cup. Biyela said the decision to leave him out would have been particularly difficult because the goalkeeper had established himself as one of the best performers in his position during the previous season.

“Let’s not write the boy off. Let’s motivate him. He has already proven to us last season that he is a very good goalkeeper if fans are behind him.

“Remember he was supposed to be one of the three goalkeepers we took to the World Cup, and that’s non-negotiable. He was one of the best goalkeepers last season. Remember, players for the World Cup are picked based on form. He can’t be a bad goalkeeper just after two months.

“He is one of our best goalkeepers in the country. All he needs is our motivation. Let’s give him confidence.”

Biyela’s comments come after Petersen was criticised for mistakes during Kaizer Chiefs’ recent match against Richards Bay. The goalkeeper’s performances have prompted concern among supporters, particularly after he had played a significant role in the team’s strong displays during the previous campaign.

Despite the criticism, Biyela remains convinced that Petersen can recover if he is given time and encouragement. He believes the goalkeeper’s previous form is evidence that his current difficulties are temporary rather than a sign of a permanent decline.

The former Kaizer Chiefs striker also suggested that supporters could have a decisive influence on Petersen’s return to confidence. Rather than focusing on his errors, Biyela urged fans to remind the captain of the quality he showed last season.

Petersen’s omission from the World Cup squad was therefore presented by Biyela as a major psychological setback, rather than evidence that he is no longer capable of performing at the highest level. His message to the club’s supporters was clear: help restore the goalkeeper’s confidence instead of writing him off.
