Jose Mourinho Respects Deschamps’ Decision to Omit Samir Nasri from France Squad
Chelsea manager José Mourinho has spoken out about Samir Nasri’s omission from France’s squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, expressing support for national coach Didier Deschamps’ decision.
Nasri, the Manchester City midfielder known for his technical ability and creativity, was left out of the 23-man list for Brazil, a move that sparked debate among fans and pundits alike. However, Mourinho offered a measured response, backing Deschamps’ authority as head coach.
“I think Nasri is a great player,” Mourinho told Yahoo. “But I also think Didier is a great coach, and if he made this decision, it’s because he has his reasons. He’s free to explain or not the reasons for his decision. I’m a coach, and you have to respect the decisions of other coaches.”
Mourinho’s comments reflect the often difficult choices faced by national team managers ahead of major tournaments. While Nasri enjoyed a solid season with City, Deschamps has previously raised concerns about the player’s influence on team harmony—though he did not elaborate publicly this time.
The Portugal-born manager has a history with Deschamps, notably facing him in the 2004 UEFA Champions League final. Mourinho’s Porto triumphed over Deschamps’ AS Monaco side to lift the trophy—a defining moment in both of their managerial careers.
As France heads into the World Cup without Nasri, the debate over his exclusion will likely continue. But for Mourinho, the focus remains on respecting professional decisions, even if they divide opinion.
