World Cup joy turns to tragedy as teenager dies in Spain celebrations

Spain’s World Cup celebrations ended in heartbreak after a 13-year-old boy died and several others were injured when a fountain collapsed during victory scenes in the western town of Ciudad Rodrigo.

Thousands of supporters took to the streets across the country after La Roja edged Argentina 1-0 in extra time on Sunday to lift their first FIFA World Cup title since 2010. However, jubilant scenes in Ciudad Rodrigo turned tragic shortly after midnight when a crowded fountain gave way.

The municipality confirmed the teenager’s death in an official statement, expressing sympathy to the victim’s family as the town mourned the devastating incident.

“The city hall of Ciudad Rodrigo expresses its sadness and presents its condolences for the death of a boy of 13.”

The statement added:

“What should have been a celebration of Spain’s team in the football World Cup turned into tragedy.”

Several injured after structure gives way

Emergency services said they received multiple distress calls just after 12:30 a.m. local time reporting that a fountain had collapsed onto a crowd.

“A few minutes after 12:30 am local time, rescue services received calls over a fountain collapsing on numerous people.”

Authorities also confirmed that another young person sustained injuries, while local reports indicated that several others required medical attention.

Spanish media reported that the structure buckled under the weight of numerous fans who had climbed onto the fountain as celebrations intensified following the final whistle.

Historic victory overshadowed

The tragedy cast a sombre shadow over what had been a memorable night for Spanish football.

Ferran Torres struck the decisive goal in extra time as Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 to secure their second World Cup crown and first in 16 years, sparking nationwide celebrations in cities and towns across the country.

Instead of unrestrained joy, however, Ciudad Rodrigo was left mourning a young life lost, as authorities continue to assess the circumstances surrounding the fatal collapse.
