World Cup Day 33 What to Watch - Spain and Argentina battle for World Cup glory

The FIFA World Cup 2026 reaches its climax on Sunday as Spain and defending champions Argentina meet in the final at New York New Jersey Stadium.

After more than a month of football across Canada, Mexico and the United States, only two teams remain. Spain are chasing their second World Cup title, while Argentina are looking to successfully defend the crown they won in Qatar four years ago and become world champions for the fourth time.

The final also brings together two generations of football stars, with 39-year-old Lionel Messi leading Argentina against a Spain side featuring 19-year-old Lamine Yamal.

Spain vs Argentina

The two pre-tournament heavyweights have taken different routes to the final.

Spain have been one of the tournament’s most dominant teams and enter the final unbeaten. Luis de la Fuente’s side have conceded just once during their run and booked their place in the showpiece with an impressive 2-0 victory over France in the semi-finals.

Argentina have had a more dramatic journey.

The defending champions survived several difficult knockout matches before producing a late comeback to beat England 2-1 in the semi-finals. Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez scored the decisive goals after Argentina had fallen behind.

That resilience has kept Lionel Scaloni’s side on course to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to win consecutive World Cups.

Messi and Yamal take centre stage

Much of the attention ahead of the final has focused on Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal.

Messi enters what could be his final World Cup appearance with eight goals and four assists at the tournament. The Argentina captain has once again been central to his country’s success and now has an opportunity to end his World Cup career by lifting the trophy for a second consecutive time.

Standing on the opposite side is Yamal, one of the brightest talents of the new generation.

The Spain winger has provided a constant attacking threat despite scoring only once at the tournament. His pace, creativity and willingness to attack defenders could be crucial against Argentina.

The contrast is difficult to ignore: one of football’s greatest players potentially playing his final World Cup match against a teenager expected to be one of the sport’s leading figures for years to come.

Spain will not man-mark Messi

Stopping Messi will be one of Spain’s biggest challenges, but De la Fuente has indicated that his team will not assign one player to follow the Argentina captain throughout the match.

Instead, Spain are expected to rely on their collective defensive organisation to limit his influence.

The European champions will also look to control possession through midfield and prevent Argentina from establishing their preferred rhythm. Rodri’s ability to dictate the tempo could be particularly important.

Argentina, meanwhile, will need to find a way through a Spain defence that has been outstanding throughout the competition. Scaloni’s side have repeatedly demonstrated their ability to remain patient and strike at decisive moments.

History awaits both teams

Argentina are chasing their fourth World Cup title and an achievement not seen in more than six decades.

Victory would make them the first nation since Pele’s Brazil won the tournaments in 1958 and 1962 to successfully defend the World Cup.

For Spain, victory would secure their second world title following their triumph in South Africa in 2010.

It would also complete a remarkable period for Spanish football after their European Championship success and underline the emergence of another outstanding generation.

One match for the World Cup

After 103 matches, everything comes down to one final contest.

Spain have reached the final through control, technical quality and an outstanding defensive record. Argentina have relied on experience, resilience and the continued brilliance of Messi.

The battle in midfield could determine who controls the game, while individual moments from Messi, Yamal or another match-winner could ultimately decide where the trophy goes.
