World Cup 2026: We will beat Mexico if we stick to our game plan – South Africa boss Hugo Broos
South Africa head coach Hugo Broos believes his side has the ability to defeat Mexico in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, provided they remain disciplined in their approach.
Bafana Bafana face the co-hosts in a Group A fixture on Thursday, 11 June, with Broos emphasising the importance of sticking to a defined tactical plan.
“We can get a result, but it will be very important to stick to the game plan,” Broos said ahead of the match. “We must also not be distracted by what is happening in the stands.”
The Belgian coach warned that Mexico pose a significant threat, describing them as a well-rounded and highly motivated team.
“They are all dangerous. It is a very good team with movement and strong unity,” he said. “You can see their ambition to become world champions in the way they play. We will need to be at our best level.”
The match, set to take place at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, marks a repeat of the opening fixture of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Kick-off for Thursday’s encounter is scheduled for 19:00 GMT, as South Africa aim to make a strong start to their campaign.
