World Cup 2026: Wayne Rooney says Senegal’s Nicolas Jackson has ‘a lot to play for’
Nicolas Jackson has been backed by Wayne Rooney to make a significant impact at the 2026 World Cup, with the former England captain describing the tournament as a major opportunity for the Senegalese forward to prove his value.
Although Senegal suffered a 3-1 defeat to France in their opening Group I match, Jackson emerged with his reputation enhanced after an energetic and threatening display against one of the tournament’s strongest teams.
The 24-year-old forward was one of Senegal’s brightest performers and caused problems for the French defence throughout the contest.
His display also drew praise from Rooney, who had identified the World Cup as an important moment in Jackson’s career even before the match took place.
Speaking on BBC Sport, Rooney suggested the tournament could play a crucial role in shaping the striker’s future.
“It’s like an audition for him, and for this World Cup in general,” Rooney said while discussing the uncertainty surrounding Jackson’s club future.
Against France, the Senegal international showed his attacking qualities from the opening stages. His movement and determination stretched a defence that included Dayot Upamecano and William Saliba, while his willingness to run at opponents kept Senegal competitive for long periods.
Jackson came close to making a decisive impact when he struck the post in the 25th minute. Later in the match, he thought he had found the net only for the effort to be ruled out for offside.
Despite creating dangerous situations, the striker was unable to register a goal or assist. He also faced intense defensive pressure and occasionally struggled to maintain possession in advanced areas. Nevertheless, his overall contribution and work rate were widely recognised.
Rooney believes the forward possesses the qualities needed to enjoy a successful tournament and expressed confidence in his ability to deliver on football’s biggest stage.
“I hope he has a really good World Cup. Whenever I have watched him play, his attitude has always been excellent. His goals and assists statistics are very good. He has a lot to play for,” Rooney added.
Jackson heads into Senegal’s remaining group matches carrying the momentum of a productive season with Bayern Munich, where he scored 11 goals and provided four assists.
The Lions of Teranga will now turn their attention to upcoming fixtures against Norway and Iraq as they attempt to revive their qualification hopes and build on the positive aspects of their performance against France.
