World Cup 2026: Top Algeria defender Ramy Bensebaïni ruled out of Argentina opener
Algeria international Ramy Bensebaïni has reportedly been ruled out of his outfit 2026 World Cup opening game against Algeria.
Despite sustaining an ankle injury in April, Algeria coach Vladimir Petković included the Borussia Dortmund defender in his final squad for the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
However, his fitness has remained a concern as the team gears up for the crucial opening game against defending champions.
According to reports, Bensebaïni is not expected to be ready for Algeria’s Group J opener against Argentina on June 17, coming a setback to Les Fennecs ahead of one of their toughest fixtures.
While the defender has returned to partial team training, medical staff are reportedly not willing to take risks with his recovery at this stage of the tournament. As a result, he is expected to miss the highly anticipated clash against the reigning world champions.
His absence will force Petković to adjust his defensive setup, with other squad members now expected to step up as Algeria prepare for a demanding opening test in Group J.
The decision reflects a cautious approach from the Algerian camp, prioritising the player’s long-term fitness over immediate involvement in a match that could set the tone for their World Cup campaign.
With Argentina awaiting in their opener, Algeria will now look to their remaining defensive options to contain one of the tournament favourites as they begin their quest for knockout-stage qualification.
