World Cup 2026: South Korea defender Lee Han-beom fires warning ahead of South Africa clash
South Korea defender Lee Han-beom has emphasized his outfit will go into their final 2026 World Cup Group A clash with the objective of snatching maximum points.
After two games, South Korea sit second in Group A with three points, trailing leaders Mexico, who have already secured six points. Czech and Bafana Bafana are level on one point each, occupying third and fourth positions respectively, setting up a tense finish to the group.
For South Korea, the equation is straightforward: a win or even a draw will be enough to secure progression to the next round. However, Lee has insisted there is no room for cautious thinking within the squad, stressing that the team’s mindset is entirely focused on claiming maximum points rather than playing for a result.
The defender emphasized that the squad’s mentality is built around aggression and ambition, with internal discussions centred on winning the match rather than managing it. According to him, there is no sense of complacency despite their favourable position in the group.
South Korea have also been studying South Africa’s tactical strengths closely, particularly their ability to build play from deep positions. Lee singled out goalkeeper Ronwen Williams as a key component in Bafana Bafana’s build-up structure, noting his distribution and composure on the ball as areas they intend to disrupt through high pressing in advanced areas of the pitch.
Defensively, South Korea are also preparing for the pace and movement of South Africa’s attacking players. Lee acknowledged that Bafana possess quick forwards capable of exploiting space in transition, prompting his side to adjust their defensive line and avoid leaving gaps in behind when pushing forward.
The tactical battle is expected to play a major role in what is shaping up to be a decisive encounter for both nations. While South Korea aim to secure qualification and finish strongly in the group, South Africa face a far more demanding task, needing an outright victory to stand any chance of advancing to the knockout stage.
The match is scheduled for Thursday, with both teams entering the fixture under significant pressure and with contrasting objectives — one chasing qualification security, the other fighting for survival.
