South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has commended his players for their display against Mexico despite suffering a 2-0 defeat in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Bafana Bafana faced the tournament co-hosts on Thursday in their Group A opener, aiming to begin their campaign with a positive result.

However, goals from Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez handed Mexico a deserved victory in a contest that also saw South Africa finish with nine men following two red cards.

Broos Encouraged by Team Performance

Despite the disappointing result, Broos expressed satisfaction with the overall performance of his team and highlighted areas that require improvement going forward.

Speaking after the match, the Belgian tactician insisted his side showed plenty of positives during the encounter.

“I think we played a very good game, but we lost the ball where we shouldn’t. We have to work on the game when we have the ball,” he said.

Focus Shifts to Remaining Group Matches

The defeat leaves South Africa with work to do in Group A, but Broos remains focused on securing enough points from the team’s remaining fixtures to keep their hopes of progressing alive.

Bafana Bafana will now turn their attention to crucial matches against Czechia and South Korea as they seek a route into the knockout stages.

South Africa’s next assignment at the World Cup is scheduled for Thursday, June 18, when they take on Czechia.
