World Cup 2026: Senegal’s return delayed after repatriation flight cancelled
Senegal’s disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign has taken another unfortunate turn after the special flight scheduled to bring the national team back home was reportedly cancelled, leaving several members of the delegation stranded in the United States.
The Lions of Teranga were expecting to begin their journey back to Senegal following their Round of 16 elimination, but their travel plans were thrown into disarray when the chartered flight was called off, despite the team already having arrived at the airport.
According to reports, the unexpected cancellation forced the delegation to alter its travel arrangements, creating further frustration after a tournament that ended in disappointment.
While the team’s collective return has been delayed, a number of Senegal’s internationally based players have already departed the United States independently.
Midfielder Pape Gueye, goalkeepers Edouard Mendy and Mory Diaw, along with defender Ismail Jakobs, reportedly left the country the day after Senegal’s exit from the competition.
They have since been joined by Krepin Diatta, goalkeeper Yehvann Diouf, veteran midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye and captain Kalidou Koulibaly, all of whom have also departed the United States to begin their post-tournament break or return to their respective clubs.
However, not every member of the Senegalese squad has been able to leave. Several players and officials remain at the team’s hotel, awaiting new travel arrangements following the cancellation of the charter flight.
The logistical setback compounds what has already been a difficult period for the West African nation. Senegal entered the tournament with high expectations after consistently establishing themselves among Africa’s strongest footballing nations, but their World Cup journey ended earlier than many supporters had hoped.
Attention will now gradually shift towards preparations for future international assignments, although the immediate priority remains ensuring the safe return of the remaining players and staff.
The cancelled flight has added an unexpected final chapter to Senegal’s World Cup campaign, highlighting the logistical challenges that can sometimes follow major international tournaments. With several players already en route to their destinations and others still awaiting departure, the Senegalese delegation hopes the travel issues will soon be resolved, allowing the team to finally close the curtain on a frustrating 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
