World Cup 2026: Senegal dispute deepens as dressing room tensions emerge after elimination
Senegal’s World Cup campaign has been overshadowed by reports of internal tension following their dramatic exit at the hands of Belgium in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Teranga Lions were eliminated 3-2 after extra time in a match that saw them surrender a two-goal lead, with Belgium fighting back late to level the tie before sealing victory in extra time through a penalty.
The defeat has reportedly triggered unrest within the national team setup, with issues now extending beyond the pitch into the management and dressing room environment.
Federation tension and staff departure
According to reports, Senegal’s Football Federation has already been affected by the fallout, with the departure of a communications officer adding to a growing sense of instability.
While administrative concerns have drawn attention, much of the focus has shifted to the decisions of head coach Pape Thiaw and his squad selection during the tournament.
Pre-tournament selection dispute
French outlet Foot Mercato reported that tensions began before the tournament after discussions involving the coaching staff and senior players regarding defender Malang Sarr.
The 27-year-old, who impressed during the season with Lens, ultimately missed out on Senegal’s final World Cup squad.
The report suggests disagreements emerged within the camp over selection decisions and player fitness assessments ahead of the competition.
Dressing room disagreement involving key players
Tensions reportedly escalated further just 24 hours before Senegal’s opening match against France, which ended in a 3-1 defeat.
According to the same report, Sadio Mané raised concerns about Kalidou Koulibaly’s fitness after the defender arrived carrying an injury.
Mané is said to have suggested that Koulibaly be replaced in the starting lineup by Malang Sarr, a proposal that was strongly opposed by the experienced defender.
Since then, relations within the squad are believed to have deteriorated, contributing to a strained atmosphere during the tournament.
On-field struggles and early exit
Koulibaly started Senegal’s group matches against France and Norway but struggled to make an impact, with his performance against Norway marked by errors that contributed to a 3-2 defeat.
He was substituted in the 72nd minute of that match and did not feature again as Senegal were eventually eliminated from the tournament.
The reports of internal disagreement have added further scrutiny to Senegal’s early exit, raising questions about unity within one of Africa’s most talented squads during the World Cup campaign.
