Algeria coach Vladimir Petkovic insists his outfit will fight to progress beyond the group stage at the 2026 World Cup tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The Fennec Foxes have been drawn in Group J alongside reigning champions Argentina, as well as Jordan and Austria, setting up a demanding path to the knockout rounds.

In an interview, Petkovic stressed that his team will approach the tournament with determination and clear objectives, while aiming to compete strongly against all opponents.

“We will try to be better than all the competitors we will face in the World Cup. And of course we have our own goals,” he said as quoted by Algerian outlet An-Nahar.

The Algerian coach also highlighted the importance of preparation and focus ahead of their opening match, stressing the need to approach the competition step by step.

“We want to arrive at our first match in the best possible condition, and then we will play one match at a time and wait to see what happens,” Petkovic added.

Despite acknowledging the difficulty of the group, the former Switzerland coach made it clear that Algeria’s primary target is to avoid an early exit and push for progression into the knockout stages.

“We will do everything we can to avoid going home after three games. Our goal is to reach the round of 16,” he stated.

Algeria will face a stern challenge against Argentina, while Jordan and Austria also pose competitive threats in what is expected to be one of the more closely contested groups.

Petkovic’s remarks reflect growing belief within the squad as they aim to make a strong impact on the global stage and improve on previous World Cup performances.

As preparations continue, attention will now turn to final squad adjustments and tactical fine-tuning ahead of their opening fixture in the tournament.
