World Cup 2026: Neymar’s availability for Morocco clash still in doubt despite positive recovery signs
Brazil remain uncertain over Neymar’s availability for their opening match of the 2026 World Cup against Morocco despite encouraging signs in the forward’s recovery from injury.
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) confirmed on Monday that the 34-year-old is making “good progress” in his rehabilitation from a right calf injury, although no indication has been given regarding whether he will be fit enough to feature in Saturday’s Group C encounter in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Neymar, Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 international goals, underwent an MRI scan on Monday as part of the ongoing assessment of his condition. The results provided a positive update for the national team camp.
The CBF said the examination “showed good progress in his treatment, within the expected parameters.”
The governing body added that the Santos forward “will continue the recovery and physical preparation process developed by the team’s medical staff.”
The update offers encouragement for Brazil as they continue preparations for their World Cup campaign, but uncertainty remains over whether Neymar will be ready in time for the opening fixture.
The attacker has not played since suffering the injury at the end of May. His absence has been closely monitored given his importance to the Seleção and his status as one of the most experienced players in the squad.
Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti had already expressed cautious optimism regarding Neymar’s recovery. Speaking on Friday, the Italian manager said he hoped the forward would be able to return to group training during the course of this week.
However, Ancelotti also stressed that there would be no unnecessary risks taken with the player’s fitness. The coach made clear that Brazil’s medical staff would follow the recovery plan carefully rather than rushing Neymar back into action.
That cautious approach reflects the injury difficulties the striker has faced in recent seasons. A series of fitness setbacks have interrupted his playing time, making the management of his recovery particularly important.
With only days remaining before Brazil face Morocco, attention will continue to focus on Neymar’s condition. While the latest medical update has eased some concerns, a final decision regarding his participation in the match has yet to be made.
For now, Brazil can take confidence from the positive progress reported by their medical team, while awaiting further developments on whether their star forward will be available for the start of their World Cup journey.
