Neil El Aynaoui is increasingly establishing himself as a key presence in Morocco’s national team, with the Roma midfielder now seen as an important component of the Atlas Lions’ midfield setup following a rapid rise at both club and international level.

The 24-year-old has impressed with his consistent performances for Morocco, particularly during the most recent Africa Cup of Nations held in his home country.

His displays at the tournament played a significant role in strengthening his position within the squad, as he demonstrated strong work ethic, tactical awareness, and adaptability across different systems.

His performances did not go unnoticed in the wider football community. According to Medi1news, Corriere dello Sport described him as a “true powerhouse” and the “best midfielder” of the tournament, underlining the impact he made on the competition.

El Aynaoui’s development has mirrored a steady rise through club football. Having come through the ranks at AS Nancy-Lorraine, he later made his mark at RC Lens before completing a high-profile move to Roma last summer in a deal reported to be worth €25 million.

At the Italian club, his importance has continued to grow. Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini is understood to value the midfielder highly, even amid strong competition for places within the squad, with El Aynaoui featuring regularly as part of the team’s plans.

His progress has now translated onto the international stage, with the midfielder included in Morocco’s official squad for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

El Aynaoui has described his selection as “a dream come true,” reflecting his pride at representing his country on football’s biggest stage.

The midfielder, son of former tennis star Younès El Aynaoui, is recognised for his versatility, with the ability to contribute defensively, support attacking play, and control the tempo of matches from midfield.

His performances have also attracted attention from several leading European clubs, with reports suggesting that Real Madrid and Barcelona are among those monitoring his development closely.

As Morocco prepare for the World Cup, El Aynaoui’s growing influence is expected to play a significant role in the team’s ambitions, with his form at club and international level continuing to elevate his status in European football.
