World Cup 2026: Mohamed Ouahbi defends Ayyoub Bouaddi selection after impressive debut
Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi has defended his decision to hand a starting role to teenage midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, insisting the selection was based purely on merit after the youngster impressed in the 1-1 draw with Brazil at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Bouaddi, 18, was handed a surprise start in Morocco’s Group C opener against Brazil and responded with a composed and energetic display in midfield, helping his side secure a valuable point against one of the tournament favourites.
Speaking in an interview with AFP, Ouahbi said the decision to start the teenager was not a gamble, but a reflection of trust in performance rather than reputation or age.
“I’m not afraid of giving young players a chance, but in this case, it wasn’t a risk at all — it wasn’t the kind of match for taking risks against Brazil,” Ouahbi explained.
He added that selection decisions under his leadership are strictly guided by form and readiness, regardless of a player’s experience level.
“I only look at players’ performance, not the age. If he’s 35 and deserves to play, he’ll play, and if he’s 17 and deserves to play, he’ll play too,” he said.
Bouaddi’s performance drew widespread attention, with the teenager showing confidence in possession and maturity beyond his years in a high-intensity encounter. His ability to withstand pressure in midfield was seen as a key factor in Morocco’s ability to match Brazil’s tempo for long spells.
The young midfielder’s emergence adds fresh options for Morocco as they continue their Group C campaign. He is widely expected to retain his place when the Atlas Lions face Scotland in their next match, where another strong performance could further cement his status as one of the breakout players of the tournament.
With Morocco seeking momentum in a competitive group, Bouaddi’s rise offers both tactical flexibility and renewed optimism for a side blending youth with experience on the world stage.
