World Cup 2026

Algeria head coach Vladimir Petković says his team is fully prepared for their opening World Cup 2026 showdown against defending champions Argentina, revealing he has both a Plan A and Plan B in place for the Group J encounter.

The North Africans will face Argentina on Wednesday, June 17, in a highly anticipated clash scheduled for 01:00 am.

“We Are Not Here to Make Up the Numbers”

Petković stressed that Algeria are not entering the tournament as underdogs just to participate, insisting his side are targeting a strong start against the world champions.

“I have prepared a Plan A and a Plan B for tomorrow’s match against Argentina. We have respect for Argentina, but we are not here just to make up the numbers,” he said.

Tactical Flexibility Against the Champions

The Algeria coach hinted at a flexible tactical approach, suggesting his team are ready to adjust depending on how the match unfolds.

His comments underline the scale of the challenge, with Argentina entering the tournament as defending champions and one of the favourites for the title.

Group J Stakes Already High

Algeria are also grouped with Austria and Jordan, making the opening fixture even more important in the battle for qualification.

Petković believes a positive result against Argentina could shape the rest of their campaign, giving his side momentum heading into the remaining group matches.

With expectations rising, Algeria will be hoping their tactical preparation and disciplined approach can help them spring a surprise against one of world football’s strongest sides.
