World Cup 2026: Hugo Broos names preliminary Bafana Bafana squad for tournament

South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has unveiled a sizeable preliminary squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, naming a broad mix of established internationals, rising prospects and several overseas-based players as Bafana Bafana begin shaping their final group for next year’s tournament.

The list, which covers all departments, features a strong PSL core alongside a number of players plying their trade in Europe and the United States, underlining Broos’ continued emphasis on blending experience with emerging talent.

In goal, Ronwen Williams leads the group, joined by Ricardo Goss, Sipho Chaine and Brandon Peterson, offering a competitive battle for the final selection spots.

The defensive unit includes Khuliso Mudau, Olwethu Makhanya (Philadelphia Union), Bradley Cross, Thabiso Monyane, Thabang Matuludi, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Aubrey Modiba and Khulumani Ndamane. The list is further boosted by international inclusions such as Imé Okon (Hannover 96), Samukele Kabini (Molde FK) and Mbekezeli Mbokazi (Chicago Fire).

In midfield, Teboho Mokoena, Jayden Adams, Brooklyn Poggenpoel, Lebohang Maboe, Thalente Mbatha and Sphephelo Sithole (CD Tondela) are all included, giving Broos multiple tactical options in the middle of the park.

The forward line carries significant firepower and depth, with Lyle Foster (Burnley) headlining the attacking group. He is joined by Evidence Makgopa, Iqraam Rayners, Relebohile Mofokeng, Oswin Appollis, Tshepang Moremi, Patrick Maswanganyi, Kamogelo Sebelebele, Thapelo Morena, Themba Zwane and Thapelo Maseko, who is based in Cyprus with AEL Limassol.

The announcement signals the start of a final evaluation phase as Broos looks to trim the squad ahead of the World Cup window. Competition for places is expected to intensify in the coming weeks, particularly in midfield and attack, where several players are vying for limited spots.

Bafana Bafana will now move into the next stage of preparation, with the final squad expected to be confirmed closer to the tournament.

The 2010 World Cup host have been housed in Group A alongside Mexico, South Korea, and Czech Republic.
