Said Martinez to referee England-Ghana clash

The world football governing body (FIFA) has appointed Honduran referee to take charge of the much-anticipated 2026 World Cup encounter between England and Ghana, scheduled for June 23 at the Boston Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Martinez will be assisted by fellow Hondurans Walter Lopez and Christian Ramirez as assistant referees one and two respectively, highlighting a strong Central American officiating presence for the match.

China’s Ning Ma has been named as the fourth official, while Fei Zhou will serve as the reserve assistant referee.

The appointment of Martinez comes as both England and Ghana prepare for a decisive showdown after winning their opening matches of the tournament. England defeated Croatia 4-2 in their first group game, while Ghana edged Panama 1-0 thanks to a late winner.

Martinez is regarded as one of the most respected referees in the CONCACAF region and has handled several high-profile international matches in recent years. His selection for the England-Ghana encounter underlines FIFA’s confidence in his ability to manage a high-intensity fixture on football’s biggest stage.

The Three Lions enter the game as favourites following their impressive attacking display against Croatia under head coach Thomas Tuchel. England captain Harry Kane was the standout performer in that match, scoring twice to continue his remarkable international form.

Ghana, however, will be motivated to upset the European giants as they seek a place in the knockout stages. The Black Stars have shown resilience and determination throughout their recent campaign, with players like Jordan Ayew, Antoine Semenyo and Caleb Yirenkyi expected to play key roles.

This will be the first-ever competitive meeting between England and Ghana at the FIFA World Cup, adding further significance to the contest. The two nations have only met once previously in senior international football — a 1-1 draw in an international friendly in 2011.

England sit top of Group L with three points, followed by Ghana, who are also on three points but trail the Three Lions on goal difference.
