World Cup 2026: Ghana eliminated after narrow defeat to Colombia in Round of 32
Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign came to a disappointing end after a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32 at Arrowhead Stadium.
The Black Stars produced a spirited performance and created several promising moments, but Jhon Arias’ first-half strike proved enough to send the South Americans through and leave Ghana heading home.
The result also dealt another major blow to Africa’s presence at the tournament, with Ghana becoming the eighth of the continent’s 10 representatives to be eliminated. Only Morocco and Egypt remain in the competition and will carry Africa’s hopes into the Round of 16.
Early Partey chance sets the tone
Ghana began brightly and almost stunned Colombia inside the opening minutes. Thomas Partey reacted quickest to a rebound in the second minute, but his effort drifted narrowly wide of the left post.
That missed opportunity proved costly as Colombia gradually settled into the contest and found the breakthrough after 14 minutes. Luis Suarez delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area and Jhon Arias met it perfectly before guiding his finish into the bottom right corner beyond Lawrence Ati Zigi.
Colombia continued to threaten and nearly doubled their lead midway through the first half when Luis Diaz collected a pass outside the area and drove a powerful effort towards goal. Ati Zigi reacted superbly to keep Ghana in the game with an excellent reflex save.
Ati Zigi keeps Black Stars alive
The Black Stars struggled to create clear openings after the break as Colombia pushed for a second goal.
Gustavo Puerta tested Ati Zigi with a strike from the edge of the area in the 55th minute, although the Ghana goalkeeper dealt with the attempt comfortably.
A minute later, Colombia thought they had extended their advantage when Diaz finished clinically after being played through by Jefferson Lerma. Celebrations were cut short, however, as referee Clement Turpin consulted VAR before ruling the goal out for offside in the build up.
The disallowed goal gave Ghana renewed belief, but Ati Zigi was called into action again shortly afterwards to deny Diaz from close range with another important save.
Ghana unable to find equaliser
Despite pushing forward in the closing stages, Ghana were unable to force an equaliser.
Partey came close once more in the 69th minute when he struck narrowly wide from outside the box after another loose ball fell kindly for him.
Colombia almost sealed the result late on through Juan Quintero, whose long-range strike flew agonisingly close to the right post in the 83rd minute.
Ghana continued to search for a way back into the match, but Colombia held firm to secure their place in the Round of 16 and bring the Black Stars’ World Cup adventure to an end.
