World Cup 2026: FIFA opens investigation after IShowSpeed allegedly targeted in racist abuse incident during Argentina, Egypt clash

FIFA has launched an investigation after popular streamer IShowSpeed was allegedly subjected to racist abuse during 2026 FIFA World Cup action between Argentina and Cape Verde.

According to reports, the incident occurred during Argentina’s dramatic 3-2 victory, with the American content creator, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr, claiming he noticed supporters making offensive gestures towards him inside the stadium.

The streamer, who boasts more than 50 million subscribers on YouTube alongside huge followings on Instagram and TikTok, appeared to react after one supporter allegedly made a gesture resembling a “monkey” insult. Footage from the moment showed Speed stepping away from the area while shaking his head.

The incident has prompted FIFA to take immediate action, with football’s world governing body confirming that an investigation is underway.

FIFA condemns racism and discrimination

In a statement, FIFA stressed that racism and discrimination have no place in football and said it had begun reviewing the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident.

“FIFA strongly condemns racism, hate and discrimination in all forms,” the governing body said.

“FIFA was made aware of an incident involving a supporter and IShowSpeed at Miami Stadium during the Argentina vs Cabo Verde match on 3 July 2026 and immediately initiated an investigation.”

FIFA added that the World Cup should represent inclusion and respect among different cultures and communities.

“The FIFA World Cup is a celebration of unity, diversity and respect. It brings together people, cultures and communities from around the world, and anyone who acts in a manner that undermines these values is not welcome in our game.”

The investigation will determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and whether disciplinary measures will follow.

Another racism controversy hits World Cup stage

The alleged abuse directed at IShowSpeed comes shortly after another racism-related controversy involving French superstar Kylian Mbappé.

Mbappé was targeted by comments from Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla following Paraguay’s defeat to France, prompting widespread criticism.

The French Football Federation announced plans to pursue legal action, describing the remarks as “utterly abhorrent and unacceptable.”
