Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan says his side will approach their FIFA World Cup Round of 16 meeting with Argentina full of belief, insisting the Pharaohs respect the reigning world champions but are not overawed by the challenge ahead.

Fresh from their dramatic penalty shootout victory over Australia, Egypt now turn their attention to a knockout clash against the 2022 world champions, with a place in the quarterfinals at stake.

Hassan acknowledged the quality of Argentina but stressed that his players have every reason to believe they can continue their impressive World Cup journey.

“We have great ambitions and we know it will not be an easy game for either side,” he said. “But we are fully prepared for the game and I am satisfied with our preparations.”

Belief growing within Egyptian camp

The Egypt coach said reaching the last 16 should not be viewed as an extraordinary achievement for a nation with Egypt’s football pedigree, adding that his players are determined to prove they belong among the world’s elite.

“Reaching the last 16 should be normal for a great team like Egypt,” Hassan said.

Hassan also pointed to the influence of internationally recognised stars Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush as evidence of Egypt’s growing stature on the global stage, arguing that a place in the quarterfinals should not be considered beyond his team’s reach.

Historic opportunity awaits the Pharaohs

Egypt earned their place in the Round of 16 after eliminating Australia in a dramatic penalty shootout and now face an even greater examination against Argentina.

The Pharaohs will be aiming to turn their confidence into another memorable World Cup achievement as they seek to book a place in the quarterfinals against one of football’s traditional powerhouses.
