World Cup 2026

DR Congo marked their long-awaited return to the FIFA World Cup with a statement performance on Wednesday, holding tournament favourites Portugal to a dramatic 1-1 draw in Houston.

The Leopards, appearing at the World Cup for the first time in 52 years, refused to be intimidated by Cristiano Ronaldo and company, producing a courageous display that earned them a memorable point and sent an early warning to the rest of Group K.

Portugal Draw First Blood

Portugal appeared on course for a comfortable evening when they struck inside six minutes.

Pedro Neto floated a superb pass into the penalty area and João Neves arrived at the perfect moment, powering a header beyond the goalkeeper to hand the Europeans an early 1-0 advantage.

The goal allowed Portugal to settle into their rhythm as they dominated possession and controlled much of the first-half proceedings.

Wissa Silences Portugal Before Half-Time

Just when Portugal looked set to take their lead into the break, DR Congo delivered a crucial response.

Arthur Masuaku whipped in a dangerous cross from the left and Yoane Wissa timed his run to perfection, smashing a close-range finish into the roof of the net in the 45th minute.

The equaliser sparked wild celebrations among the Congolese supporters and completely changed the complexion of the match heading into the second half.

VAR Heartbreak for Portugal

Portugal believed they had restored their lead ten minutes after the restart.

João Cancelo found the back of the net and celebrated what seemed to be a vital goal, only for the assistant referee’s flag to intervene. The effort was ruled out for offside, leaving Portugal stunned and DR Congo relieved.

The decision kept the score level and handed fresh belief to the African side.

Bakambu Inches Away from Shock Winner

Moments later, DR Congo nearly produced one of the biggest surprises of the opening round.

Cédric Bakambu brilliantly controlled a pass inside the penalty area before unleashing a shot that beat the goalkeeper but crashed against the right post.

For a few seconds, Portugal appeared beaten, only for the woodwork to come to their rescue.

Ronaldo Denied as Leopards Hold Firm

Cristiano Ronaldo attempted to inspire Portugal to victory but found the Congolese defence in no mood to surrender.

The veteran striker came agonisingly close in the 62nd minute, steering a shot narrowly wide after controlling a pass from Francisco Conceição.

He threatened again later in the match, but a brave defensive block denied him what could have been the winning goal.

Despite Portugal’s late pressure, DR Congo stood firm and protected their historic result until the final whistle.

A Point That Could Change Everything

As the match ended, it was DR Congo celebrating a result that felt like a victory.

The Leopards matched one of the tournament favourites with determination, organisation and belief, earning a point that could prove crucial in the battle for qualification.

For Portugal, it was a frustrating start to their World Cup campaign. For DR Congo, it was the perfect way to announce their return to football’s biggest stage after more than half a century away.
