World Cup 2026: DR Congo coach Sébastien Desabre targets knockout stage spot after Portugal draw

Democratic Republic of the Congo head coach Sébastien Desabre has insisted that his side’s ambitions extend beyond their impressive draw against Portugal as they pursue a place in the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Leopards produced a disciplined and spirited performance in their opening Group H fixture, holding Portugal to a 1-1 draw and earning a valuable point against one of Europe’s strongest nations.

While the result was widely celebrated among Congolese supporters, Desabre believes his team cannot afford to dwell on the achievement, stressing that qualification for the next round remains the ultimate objective.

Speaking after the match, the French tactician acknowledged the significance of taking a point from the encounter but emphasized that much work still lies ahead.

“It is a positive way to begin the tournament, but we have to continue improving,” Desabre said. “We are pleased with the draw, but our goal is to advance from the group. One point alone is not enough to achieve that.”

The coach noted that every result will be crucial in what he described as a highly competitive group, adding that securing a victory in one of their remaining matches could prove decisive in the race for qualification.
