World Cup 2026: Didier Deschamps hails Michael Olise as one of the world’s best players
France head coach Didier Deschamps has lavished praise on Michael Olise, describing the Bayern Munich star as one of the best players in world football following his impressive rise for club and country.
Olise has been one of France’s standout performers in recent months and played an important role in Les Bleus’ opening stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 24-year-old winger has continued the excellent form he displayed during his first season at Bayern Munich, where he established himself as one of Europe’s most dangerous attacking players.
Speaking to Bild, Deschamps reflected on Olise’s remarkable development since breaking into the French national team setup.
“Michael Olise has made incredible progress. With us in the France national team, it was initially a little difficult, but through hard work and support, he developed,” Deschamps said.
The France manager revealed that Olise needed time to adapt to the demands of international football but has since transformed into a crucial member of the squad thanks to his dedication and willingness to improve.
Deschamps also highlighted the role Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany has played in accelerating the winger’s development.
“Vincent Kompany also has a big influence on the fact that Michael has made such a huge step forward. Under his guidance, he had a great season, with efficiency, character and personality.”
Since joining Bayern, Olise has added greater consistency to his game while maintaining the creativity, dribbling ability and vision that made him one of the most exciting young talents in European football. His performances have helped establish him as a regular starter for both Bayern and France.
The former Crystal Palace attacker has also become an important creative force for Les Bleus, forming part of an exciting attacking unit alongside Kylian Mbappé, Bradley Barcola and Ousmane Dembélé.
Deschamps believes Olise’s qualities now place him among the elite players in the game.
“Today, Michael is one of the best players in the world, but media attention is not really his thing. What matters to him is the pitch, and then he wants to have his own life.”
The comments reflect Olise’s reputation as one of football’s quieter stars. Unlike many modern footballers, the France international rarely seeks the spotlight and prefers to let his performances speak for themselves.
Born in England to a Nigerian father and a mother of French-Algerian heritage, Olise represented France at youth level before committing to the senior national team. His decision has proven to be a major boost for Les Bleus, who now possess one of the most technically gifted wingers in world football.
As France continue their pursuit of a third World Cup title, Deschamps will be hoping Olise can maintain his outstanding form. If his recent performances are anything to go by, the Bayern Munich star could play a decisive role in France’s quest for glory in North America.
