Ousmane Dembélé will have more than France’s place in the World Cup quarter-finals on his mind when Les Bleus face Paraguay in the Round of 16, with the winger still searching for his first goal in the knockout stages of the tournament.

France take on Paraguay on 4 July in a match that could extend their World Cup campaign, while also offering Dembélé the chance to end a scoring run that has followed him across three editions of the competition.

Although the France international has been influential in attack, creating chances and contributing to his team’s performances, he has yet to score in a World Cup knockout match.

A long wait for a knockout goal

Dembélé’s performances at the 2026 World Cup have once again highlighted his ability to stretch defences, create opportunities and support France’s attacking play.

Despite those contributions, the decisive finishing touch has continued to evade him.

The winger has now featured in six World Cup knockout matches without finding the net.

That sequence began against Uruguay in the 2018 tournament before continuing with appearances against Poland, England, Morocco and Argentina during the 2022 World Cup.

His most recent knockout appearance came in France’s 3-0 victory over Sweden in the Round of 32 at the 2026 tournament, where he again failed to score despite another energetic display.

Chance to rewrite the statistic

The meeting with Paraguay presents Dembélé with another opportunity to bring that run to an end.

A goal would not only help France progress to the quarter-finals but would also remove a statistic that has followed the winger throughout his World Cup career.

If he fails to score, Dembélé will move level with Marcus Rashford and Denílson, who each played seven World Cup knockout matches without finding the net.

The current record belongs to Dirk Kuyt, who featured in nine knockout-stage matches without scoring.

France focused on quarter-final place

While the individual milestone has attracted attention, France’s primary objective remains securing qualification for the next round.

Didier Deschamps’ side enter the knockout match looking to continue their campaign, with Dembélé expected to play an important role in the attacking line.

His movement, pace and creativity have consistently caused problems for opposing defences, even when goals have not followed.

Against Paraguay, the France winger will once again be tasked with helping Les Bleus advance, while hoping this could finally be the match in which he ends his World Cup knockout scoring drought.

Whether the long-awaited breakthrough arrives remains to be seen, but the Round of 16 offers Dembélé another opportunity to change both the result and his own tournament record.
