World Cup 2026: Bruno Fernandes wary of DR Congo threat ahead of Group K opener
Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes has cautioned against underestimating DR Congo ahead of their opening Group K clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the African side possesses the quality to trouble any opponent.
The Manchester United star acknowledged that Portugal have thoroughly studied their opponents and are fully aware of the challenges they will face when the two teams meet on Wednesday.
Speaking ahead of the encounter, Fernandes highlighted DR Congo’s physicality, pace on the counter-attack, and attacking quality as key strengths that Portugal must be prepared to handle.
“We know their qualities very well,” Fernandes said. “They are a physically strong team, very quick on the counter-attack and have players with a lot of individual talent. They are also dangerous when delivering crosses into the box.”
The midfielder noted that DR Congo’s combination of athleticism and technical ability makes them a difficult opponent, particularly in transition situations where they can quickly turn defence into attack.
Despite his respect for the Leopards, Fernandes expressed confidence in Portugal’s preparations, revealing that the European side have spent considerable time analysing their opponents and developing strategies to neutralise their strengths.
“They are a strong team and very well prepared,” he added. “They can cause problems for any opponent, but we have worked hard on stopping their threats and we are ready for the challenge.”
Portugal enter the tournament among the favourites to advance from Group K, which also features Colombia and Uzbekistan. However, Fernandes’ comments suggest there will be no room for complacency as the 2016 European champions seek a positive start to their World Cup campaign.
DR Congo, making a return to football’s biggest stage, will be eager to cause an upset and boost their chances of progressing from what many consider a highly competitive group.
The clash is expected to provide an intriguing battle between Portugal’s wealth of international experience and DR Congo’s pace, power and attacking ambition.
Kick-off is scheduled for 17:00 GMT, with both sides aiming to secure a crucial three points in their opening match of the tournament.
