World Cup 2026: Argentina vs Algeria Tactical Preview

Argentina begin their defence of the FIFA World Cup crown with a Group J clash against Algeria in Kansas City on June 17.

While Lionel Scaloni’s side enter the tournament among the favourites to lift the trophy once again, Algeria arrive with ambitions of causing an upset and making a strong statement in their first World Cup appearance since 2014. Group J also includes Austria and Jordan, making every point crucial in the race for qualification.

The reigning champions come into the tournament with a squad that combines experienced leaders and players in their prime. Another important tactical factor will be Algeria’s defensive shape. Petkovic’s side are expected to defend with numbers behind the ball, reducing the space available for Messi and Argentina’s forwards. Argentina enter the match as clear favourites and are considered overwhelming favourites to top Group J. However, Algeria possess enough quality, organization and experience to make life difficult.
