The Algerian Football Federation has officially escalated its frustration over refereeing decisions during Algeria’s 3-0 defeat to Argentina by filing a formal complaint with FIFA following the controversial Group Stage clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to sources cited by TSA Tout sur l’Algérie, the federation confirmed reports previously published by Compétition, accusing the officiating team led by Polish referee Szymon Marciniak and the Video Assistant Referee system of making decisions that significantly affected the outcome of the match.

The complaint reportedly focuses on multiple incidents that Algeria believes unfairly disadvantaged the Desert Warriors during the encounter against the reigning world champions.

Algeria Furious Over Messi Incident

The central point of the complaint concerns an incident involving Lionel Messi in the 32nd minute of the match.

According to the Algerian Federation’s argument, Messi committed a dangerous foul on defender Aissa Mandi after appearing to stamp on the player’s leg in full view of both the referee and VAR officials.

Despite the challenge, Messi did not receive a yellow or red card and remained on the pitch. The Argentine captain had earlier opened the scoring in the 17th minute before helping his side secure a comfortable victory.

Algeria reportedly views the incident as evidence of what it described as “special protection” afforded to the Argentina star during major international tournaments.

Mac Allister Challenge Also Included in Complaint

The official complaint also referenced a second controversial moment involving Argentina midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.

In the 74th minute, Mac Allister allegedly struck Algerian player Ibrahim Maza with an elbow to the face, causing the midfielder to fall to the ground inside the area.

However, referee Marciniak neither awarded a penalty nor issued any disciplinary punishment following the incident, a decision that further intensified Algeria’s anger after the final whistle.

Refereeing Decisions Spark Widespread Debate

The officiating performance quickly became a major talking point across football media and online discussions following the match.

According to the reports, several local and international outlets, alongside refereeing analysts, criticized the decisions made during the game, with some describing the officiating display as “scandalous” and influential to the final result.

The controversy has added to growing debates surrounding officiating standards and VAR consistency during the opening stages of the tournament.

Algeria Demands Investigation From FIFA

By submitting the complaint directly to FIFA, the Algerian Football Federation has signaled its determination to challenge what it believes are repeated refereeing injustices in major competitions.

The federation is reportedly demanding a transparent investigation into the performance of the officiating team and clearer accountability regarding controversial VAR decisions.

While Argentina celebrated a dominant opening victory, the fallout from the match continues to generate controversy, with Algeria insisting the refereeing decisions played a decisive role in shaping the contest.
