Didier Deschamps, the coach of the French national team, is preparing for the 2014 World Cup by announcing a preliminary list of 30 players on May 13. This decision mirrors the approach taken by his predecessor, Raymond Domenech, for previous tournaments. Deschamps acknowledges that some players will inevitably be disappointed by not making the final cut.
In an interview with Le Monde, Deschamps emphasized the challenging nature of his task: “On May 13, I will announce 30 names. There will perhaps be 50 or 100 disappointed. I know it. But it’s my job, my responsibility to make choices. This is the slightly negative side, but I accept it.”
For the friendly match against the Netherlands in March, Deschamps called up 24 players, many of whom are likely contenders for the final squad. However, he will need to exclude 7 players before finalizing the squad on June 2.
