Women’s AFCON 2026: Cameroon face a defining test against Nigeria in Casablanca

Cameroon will attempt to overturn a long-standing rivalry when they meet Nigeria in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2026 in Casablanca on Sunday.

The Indomitable Lionesses know they face the side that has most consistently blocked their path on the African stage. Nigeria’s Super Falcons have dominated the head-to-head record and have repeatedly prevailed when the two teams have met in the competition’s decisive rounds.

Of the 19 matches played between the countries since 2004, Nigeria have won 13. Cameroon have claimed only four victories, while the other two games ended in draws.

The imbalance is even more pronounced in the biggest matches. Cameroon and Nigeria have contested three Women’s AFCON finals, with the Super Falcons winning all of them.

Nigeria’s most emphatic success came in 2004, when they beat Cameroon 5-0 in the final. Ten years later, they secured a 2-0 victory in the 2014 final. The pattern continued in 2016, when Nigeria defeated Cameroon 1-0 in front of the home crowd in Yaounde to lift the trophy once again.

Across those three finals, Nigeria scored eight goals without reply and completed a clean sweep of titles against their rivals.

The Super Falcons have also eliminated Cameroon six times in the knockout stages of the Women’s AFCON. In addition to the three final victories, Nigeria won semi-final meetings in 2006, 2010 and 2018.

Their record against the Lionesses extends beyond those games. Nigeria also beat Cameroon in the third-place play-offs at the 2008 and 2022 editions, as well as in the qualification campaign for the 2024 Olympic Games. That sequence has established the Super Falcons as Cameroon’s principal continental nemesis.

There are, however, signs that the gap between the teams may be narrowing.

Cameroon produced one of their most significant victories over Nigeria in 2011, during qualifying for the London Olympics. After losing the first leg 2-1, the Lionesses levelled the tie with another 2-1 result in the return match before securing qualification in a penalty shootout.

That remains Cameroon’s only success in a direct knockout tie against Nigeria. A year later, the Lionesses also defeated the Super Falcons in the third-place play-off at the 2012 Women’s AFCON.

The more recent meetings have offered further encouragement. In February, Cameroon recorded a 1-0 friendly victory over Nigeria after a disciplined display. The Super Falcons responded a few days later by winning the return match 3-1, but Cameroon’s initial success was their first against Nigeria in more than a decade.

History therefore gives Nigeria the clear advantage ahead of Sunday’s quarter-final. Cameroon’s record in the rivalry remains painful, particularly in the matches that have carried the greatest reward.

But their recent performances, together with memories of the 2011 Olympic qualifying comeback and the 2012 third-place victory, provide the Indomitable Lionesses with reasons to believe they can finally defeat their most persistent continental obstacle when the stakes are highest.
