The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled the pots for the highly anticipated 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) group stage draw, which will take place on Friday at the Mohamed VI Technical Center in Salé, Morocco. The ceremony is set to begin at 8 p.m. local time (GMT+1).
CAF has divided the 12 participating teams into four pots based on their current FIFA rankings. Each of the tournament’s four groups will feature one team from each pot.
Pot 1 comprises the top-seeded teams: Morocco, as hosts and 2022 finalists; Nigeria, a record 11-time champion; and South Africa, the defending titleholder. These teams will automatically be placed at the top of Groups A, B, and C, respectively.
Pot 2 includes Zambia, who finished third in 2022, alongside Ghana and Tunisia. Meanwhile, Pot 3 features Mali, Senegal, and Algeria, setting the stage for a potential high-stakes clash between neighbors Morocco and Algeria during the group stage.
The fourth and final pot contains the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, and Botswana, with the latter marking its second consecutive appearance—a historic achievement for the nation.
This year’s tournament, scheduled to take place from July 5 to 26, 2024, will be held in Morocco for the second consecutive edition.
Teams and fans alike are eagerly awaiting the draw to determine the path to glory in Africa’s premier women’s football competition.
