Wolves sign Burkina Faso winger Bertrand Traore on free transfer

Burkina Faso winger Bertrand Traore has joined Wolves on a free transfer after leaving Sunderland, giving the Championship club an experienced wide attacker for the 2026-27 season.

The 31-year-old right winger completed the move on 7 September and has signed a contract with Wolves until 30 June 2027. No fee was paid for the former Sunderland player, who had been without a club since departing the Black Cats on 1 July.

Traore arrives with extensive experience across European football, including spells in the Premier League, Ligue 1 and Eredivisie. He has made 77 Premier League appearances, scoring 12 goals and providing eight assists, while his record in the Netherlands includes 31 goals and 11 assists in 99 Eredivisie matches.

The left-footed forward spent the 2025-26 season at Sunderland after joining from Ajax for €2.9m in September 2025. His move to England followed a season with Ajax, where he arrived as a free agent from Villarreal in July 2024.

Traore began his senior career at Chelsea after progressing through the club’s development system, and spent time on loan at Vitesse and Ajax. He later moved permanently to Lyon for €10m in 2017 before joining Aston Villa for €18.4m in 2020. His career also includes a loan spell at Basaksehir and a period with Villarreal.

At international level, Traore represents Burkina Faso. He was part of the Burkina Faso Under-17 side that won the Under-17 Africa Cup in 2011, and he has also played in major European competitions. His record includes 11 goals and seven assists in 32 Europa League appearances, as well as two goals and an assist in 15 Champions League matches.

Traore’s arrival adds a player who has operated in several attacking systems and has experience of English football from his time in the Premier League. He made 12 Premier League appearances for Aston Villa during his career, scoring once, and has also featured in the FA Cup and EFL Cup.

The move formally takes Traore to Wolves on a free transfer, with his contract running until 30 June 2027.
