Wolves eye move for South African defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi from Chicago Fire FC

Wolves are being linked with a move for South African centre-back Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who currently plays for Chicago Fire FC in Major League Soccer.

The 20-year-old left-footed defender joined Chicago Fire FC in January 2026 from Orlando Pirates and has seen his market value rise to 3.5m since his switch to the United States.

Mbokazi, who wears the number 4 shirt in Chicago and stands at 1.77m, has emerged as one of the more highly rated young defenders in his age group, with Wolves now credited with interest as they assess options in the Championship.

Born in Hluhluwe, KwaZulu-Natal, Mbokazi moved through the Orlando Pirates system, progressing from the reserves to the first team in October 2024 before earning his transfer to MLS less than two years later.

His rapid development has been reflected in successive market value increases during his time at Orlando Pirates, rising from 300,000 in May 2025 to 2.5m by January 2026, shortly before his move to Chicago Fire FC.

Mbokazi is listed with South Africa as his nationality and is regarded primarily as a central defender, with his left footedness adding balance across the back line for clubs looking to strengthen in that area.

No agreement has been reached between Chicago Fire FC and Wolves, and the rumour remains at an early stage.
