Wolfsburg trigger buy clause to permanently sign French-Congolese defender Sael Kumbedi
Wolfsburg have officially made Sael Kumbedi’s move permanent after activating the purchase clause in his loan agreement with Olympique Lyonnais, Africasoccer can report.
The 20-year-old defender joined the Bundesliga side at the start of the season on an initial loan that cost the German club €1 million, with a €6 million option to buy included in the deal.
The clause was tied to Kumbedi’s playing time, requiring him to start at least five league matches and feature for a minimum of 45 minutes in each.
His recent appearance against Eintracht Frankfurt fulfilled the final requirement, automatically converting the transfer into a permanent move.
Kumbedi has made an impressive start to life in Germany, registering three assists in six Bundesliga matches and quickly establishing himself as a bright attacking outlet from the back. His development convinced Wolfsburg to move ahead with the deal earlier than expected.
Lyon, who continue to face financial challenges despite winning their appeal to remain in Ligue 1, will receive a total of €7 million from the transfer.
