Newcastle striker Yoane Wissa has spoken candidly about his absence from the Democratic Republic of Congo’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, saying stepping aside was the right decision despite his deep emotional attachment to the national team.
Wissa, who suffered a knee injury while on pre-season duty with DR Congo, has since returned to full fitness and is back among the goals for his club. Yet, as AFCON gets underway in Morocco, the 27-year-old believes he is not physically ready to perform at the level required on the continental stage.
“I’m not in the best shape to represent my country right now. It’s a very difficult decision to make,” he told Foot RDC. “The DRC holds a special place in my heart. I can only wish my team-mates the best of luck in this AFCON.”
Rather than rushing back into international action, Wissa says his priority is regaining peak condition so he can contribute meaningfully later in the year. He is targeting a return for the decisive World Cup play-off matches scheduled for March, which he sees as another crucial moment for the Leopards.
In Wissa’s absence, DR Congo have made an encouraging start to their AFCON campaign, opening with a victory over Benin. The result has lifted spirits within the camp and among supporters, as the team looks to build momentum and make a strong impression at the tournament.
