William Fonkeu: Defensive midfielder linked with move to Moldovan side Milsami

William Fonkeu has completed a move to FC Milsami Orhei, signing for the Moldovan club on a free transfer from his previous status as a free agent, with his contract running from 2026-03-06 to 2027-06-30. The Belgian-Cameroonian defensive midfielder arrives in Orhei with a current market valuation of €200k and is set to join a side competing in Moldova’s top flight, the Super Liga.

The transfer ends Fonkeu’s short spell without a club following his departure from Bulgarian side CSKA 1948, where he became a free agent earlier in the 2025–26 season. Milsami incur no transfer fee for the deal, securing a player with recent experience in Eastern European football and a profile that fits a ball-winning, screening role in midfield. His arrival immediately deepens Milsami’s options in the centre of the pitch as they look to strengthen their squad for domestic competition.

Fonkeu’s move to Moldova continues a career that has increasingly taken him away from his native Belgium. Born in Etterbeek and standing at 1.88m, he has represented clubs in both Belgium and Bulgaria and now adds a third country to his résumé. He operates primarily as a defensive midfielder and is listed as right-footed, a profile that suggests he will be used to protect the back line and provide physical presence in front of the defence for Milsami.

Before becoming unattached, Fonkeu’s trajectory had gathered momentum in Bulgaria. After leaving Belgian side RFC Mandel United, he joined Chernomorets Balchik, where his market value rose significantly, climbing from €25k to €150k in the 2023–24 period. That form earned him a move to Hebar Pazardzhik, also in Bulgaria, with his valuation peaking at €200k in 2024. A subsequent step up to CSKA 1948 saw his estimated worth increase again to €250k in mid-2025, before it stabilised at €200k following his release and months without a club.

Earlier in his career, Fonkeu at various times played for UR La Louvière Centre, RFC Mandel United, FC Kosova Schaerbeek and KV Woluwe Zaventem, all in Belgium, underlining a gradual progression from lower-tier Belgian football into more competitive environments abroad. His dual nationality, Belgium and Cameroon, means his development has been followed from both countries, though the data does not indicate any senior national-team appearances.

While Fonkeu joins Milsami with no transfer fee attached, his market value of €200k reflects both his physical profile and his accumulated experience across different leagues. The contract running until 2027-06-30 offers him medium-term stability after several moves in quick succession, including two transfers within Bulgaria in 2024–25 and his spell without a club later in 2025.

For Milsami, the signing represents a calculated addition: a 26‑year‑old defensive midfielder in his prime years, already accustomed to adapting to new leagues and clubs. For Fonkeu, the move to the Moldovan Super Liga provides an opportunity to re-establish his value on the pitch and potentially set up another step in his career once this contract reaches its end.
